Education Today

Write a blog post about an event or experience in 2009 that gave you hope for the future of American education.

I have many nieces and nephews in school today so I feel I get a good perspective on how education has developed and what it is like in 2009. One of my nephews is my god-son so I attended a program in his second grade classroom and was totally blown away at what I saw. First and foremost, classrooms of today are certainly not like the classrooms I attended in the 80s. The desks were all in small groups and students worked together on everything.

The classroom also had an overall comfort to it. In the sense that it felt warm and welcoming upon entering. There were many places for students to work outside of their desk space, the library was a cozy corner and everything about the classroom was colorful and student centered.

I had a great time as a visitor of a present day second grade classroom and only look forward to having a child in the future who will have a classroom very similar to it.

This post is part of the MAT@USC Hope for the holiday’s event. Did you have an experience or witness something in 2009 which gave you hope for the future of American education? If so, please see this post for more information on how to share it.
